California Group To Submit Anti-Gay Referendum Signatures

(San Francisco, California) A coalition of conservative groups says it has collected more than enough signatures to force a proposed amendment banning same-sex marriage onto the November ballot.

The groups, under the banner 'Protect Marriage' say they have collected more than 1.1 signatures, and will present them to county registrars this week.

Ballot initiatives require 694,354 signatures to qualify.

Registrars are then required to take a random sample of signatures to verify. If that sampling shows at least 10 percent more valid signatures than required the petitions will be certified and the measure will be placed on the November ballot.

Protect Marriage said it has so many more names than the law mandates it has no doubt the question will be put to voters.
