It is about humanity, it is about equality and it is about ending discrimination

San Diego City Council Vote on California Marriage Equality Case Re-docketed to September 18th by Dae Elliott

The San Diego City Council voted on Tues., Sept. 4 on whether to sign a friend-of-the-court (amicus) brief in the marriage equality case currently before the California Supreme Court. Most major cities in California have already signed on, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Long Beach, San Jose, Oakland and a dozen other cities in California. San Diego is the state’s second largest city, and as we know, has a reputation for being moderate to conservative. City Attorney of San Francisco stated that "this litigation represents what may be the defining civil rights struggle of our time. It is about humanity, it is about equality and it is about ending discrimination that has no place in the twenty-first century California."

The motion brought by Toni Atkins did not pass by a 4-4 vote. One of the suprising votes was Donna Frye's vote against this motion. While the rest of the council members that dissented did not explain their reasons, Frye did offer some insight. “I think we at least need to allow both sides to weigh in on this issue. The public has a right to participate, and I do not believe that has occurred." The issue has been redocketed for the September 18th meeting. Let the city council hear from you on this issue! Call those that voted for us and thank them for their support. Call those that voted against, especially Donna Frye, and tell them the importance of supporting marriage equality in San Diego. Let them hear from our community. Get the word out. Here is a moment when your action can make a difference!
